Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Responds to House Fire in Mt Vernon Area

On Saturday, January 20, at approximately 5:58 p.m. Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units were dispatched for a reported house fire in the 3800 blk of Kings Hill Court in the Mt Vernon area of Fairfax County. Units arrived on the scene to find a two-story, single-family home with fire on the first floor extending to the second floor. Crews worked to extinguish the fire quickly. During search and rescue operations, one elderly male was rescued and transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The occupant died later that evening. The cause of death is pending an autopsy and toxicology report from the medical examiner. There were no firefighter injuries.

A neighbor observed the fire from the rear of the structure and called 911. While smoke alarms were present in the residence, it remains uncertain whether they were activated. The ongoing investigation has identified the living room as the origin of the fire, although the exact cause is yet to be determined.

Red Cross is assisting with the additional displaced occupants who were not home at the time of the fire. Damages as a result of the fire were approximately $475,500.
