Herndon House Fire Caused by Improperly Discarded Fireworks

On Tuesday, July 4, 2023, at approximately 12:55am, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, along with our mutual aid partners from Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Fire and Rescue and Loudoun County Fire and Rescue, responded to reports of a house fire in the 600 blk of Stuart Court in Herndon.

Units arrived on the scene to find a large volume of fire showing from the front and side of a two-story, single-family home. Crews quickly initiated firefighting operations to contain and extinguish the fire. One patient was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. There were no reported firefighter injuries.

Twelve occupants were home at the time of the fire. All safely evacuated the home and called 911. Smoke alarms were present, but activated after the fire was discovered.

Fire Investigators determined that the fire originated near the sliding glass door, inside the screened-in patio. The fire was caused by improperly discarded spent fireworks. The fire is accidental in nature.

Twelve occupants were displaced as a result of the fire. Red Cross assistance was offered and accepted. Damages as a result of the fire are approximately $371,290.
