Smoke Alarms Alert Occupants To Fort Hunt House Fire

On Monday, October 15 at approximately 2:00 a.m., units from the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department and the City of Alexandria Fire Department were dispatched for a reported house fire in the 1100 block of Arcturus Lane in the Fort Hunt area of Fairfax County.

Units arrived on scene to find heavy fire showing from the rear of a one-story, single family home with a basement. Crews worked quickly to extinguish the bulk of the fire that was on the outside of the home. There was some fire extension into the home and attic area that was extinguished. One civilian was evaluated for smoke inhalation but refused transportation to an area hospital. There were no reported firefighter injuries.

Five adults, two who were visiting, and two dogs were in the home at the time of the fire. Working smoke alarms awoke the occupants. Upon investigation, the home owner discovered the fire. The home owner evacuated the house and called 9-1-1. He then proceeded to assist two occupants to safety through a basement window prior to fire department arrival.

Fire Investigators determined that the fire was accidental in nature and started on the exterior of the home, under the attached sunroom. The cause of the fire was the accidental ignition of charcoal briquettes that were stored under the sunroom.

A total of three occupants were displaced because of the fire. Red Cross Services were offered and declined. Damages as a result of the fire were approximately $237,500.
