On Tuesday, September 11 at approximately 2:53 a.m., units from Fairfax County Fire and Rescue and Arlington County Fire Department responded to a reported townhouse fire in the 3100 block of Black Hickory Drive in the West Falls Church area of Fairfax County.
Units arrived on scene of a two-story, middle unit townhome with no fire or smoke showing. Upon further investigation, crews discovered a fire in the attic area of the townhome. The fire was quickly extinguished. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported.
An occupant of the home called 9-1-1 when she smelled smoke. Smoke alarms were present but did not activate due to the location of the fire. One fire sprinkler head activated as the occupants were evacuating the home.
Fire Investigators determined that the fire was accidental in nature and started in the attic space. The cause of the fire was an electrical event involving an attic fan that ignited ordinary combustibles (blown-in insulation).
No occupants were displaced because of the fire. Red Cross assistance was offered and declined. Damages as a result of the fire are estimated to be $37,500.
