Lamp Ignites Herndon House Fire

On Monday, May 29, at approximately 9:50 p.m., units from Fairfax County Fire and Rescue responded for a reported house fire in the 2700 block of Crystal Wood Court in the Herndon section of Fairfax County.

Units arrived on scene to find a two-story, single family home with smoke showing from the front door. Firefighters located a fire in the basement of the home and quickly brought it under control. All occupants of the home safely evacuated prior to fire department arrival. There were no reports of civilian or firefighter injuries.

There were two occupants home at the time of the fire. One of the occupants smelled smoke and discovered the fire in the basement. Smoke alarms activated after the fire had been discovered. Red Cross assistance was requested and accepted. Two adult occupants were displaced as a result of the fire.

Fire Investigators determined that the fire started in the basement. The fire is accidental in nature and was caused by a halogen type lamp placed too close to ordinary combustibles.

Damages as a result of the fire are estimated to be approximately $125,000.
