Improper Use Of Smoking Materials Causes Fair Oaks Apartment Fire

On Tuesday, March 14, at approximately 3:07 a.m., units were dispatched for a fire alarm sounding in the 12400 block of Hayes Court in the Fair Lakes section of Fairfax County. Less than a minute after dispatch, a 9-1-1 call was received from the address stating there was a fire. Additional units were dispatched for response.

Units arrived on the scene of a three-story garden apartment to find a small fire in a bedroom. The fire was controlled by the fire sprinkler system. The remaining fire was quickly extinguished.

Three adult occupants received minor, non-life threatening injuries while attempting to extinguish the fire prior to fire department arrival. All occupants were treated at the scene and did not require transportation to an area hospital.

Fire Investigators determined the fire was accidental and originated in a bedroom. The fire was caused by an occupant who was smoking in bed and dropped a cigarette on to oxygen tubing. This resulted in a flash fire that ignited bed linens and other combustible items.

Three occupants were displaced as a result of the fire. Red Cross assistance was offered and declined. Damages are estimated to be approximately $18,750.
