Unattended Fire Pit Starts Cabana Fire


On Sunday, March 5, at approximately 3:36 p.m., units responded to a reported outside fire located in the 800 block of Leigh Mill Road in the Great Falls section of Fairfax County.

Units arrived on scene and reported fire showing in a cabana that was approximately 15 feet from the house. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and prevented it from spreading to the home.

The home owner discovered the fire and called 911. All occupants of the home safely evacuated as a precaution due to the close proximity of the fire. There were no reported fire fighter or civilian injuries. Red Cross assistance was declined.

Fire Investigators determined that the fire started outside in a fire pit and extended to the cabana. The cause of the fire was the result of an unattended fire pit and is classified as accidental in nature.

Damages as a result of the fire is approximately $80,000.
