As many of you might recall our Urban Search and Rescue Team, Virginia Task Force – 1, was deployed south for Hurricane Matthew a couple of weeks ago.
What many did not know is that three members of our Urban Search and Rescue Team were deployed to Haiti for three weeks supporting a United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) team on the ground during and after Hurricane Matthew. The team provided communications equipment, coordinated all logistical needs, and conducted damage assessments in the two most heavily damaged cities.
The three team members recently returned from their mission and were welcomed back by Fire Chief Bowers. In the photo below are (L-R) Technician Juan Ayala (Fire Station 14-B), Lieutenant Matthew Tamillow (OPS-B), Fire Chief Bowers, and Technician Raul Perla (Fire Station 14-C).
