On Thursday, September 1, at approximately 8:22 p.m., units responded to a reported fire in the 8800 block of Cameo Square in the West Springfield area of Fairfax County. Fire Station 27, West Springfield, arrived first on scene and reported heavy smoke showing from the basement area of a two-story, middle of the row townhouse.
The fire was discovered by the homeowner who called 9-1-1. Smoke alarms were present and activated after discovery of the fire. Two occupants and two dogs had safely evacuated the home prior to fire department arrival.
Firefighters took a hose line around to the back of the home and proceeded to extinguish the fire. There were no injuries reported to civilians or firefighters. The occupants of the home will be displaced. Red Cross was called and provided assistance.
The fire was determined to be accidental and the result of a water heater malfunction which ignited nearby combustibles. Damages were estimated to be $125,000.00.
