Three-Alarm Fire Displaces 41 in Falls Church Area

On June 12, at approximately 3:55 p.m., units responded to the 2800 block of Pine Spring Road for reports of multiple townhouses on fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters observed smoke and fire showing from multiple units within the three-story townhouse unit. Dry and windy conditions made the fire difficult to bring under control and contributed to its spread. Three alarms were sounded bringing additional resources to the scene and mutual aid was provided by Arlington County Fire Department and City of Fairfax Fire Department. A Fairfax County police officer was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries.

The building had smoke alarms that did not activate as the fire was on the exterior of the building. As a result of the fire, 41 occupants have been displaced and are receiving assistance from the Red Cross. Total loss of property is estimated at $689,217.

The fire was determined to be accidental. The origin of the fire was on the exterior of the structure in a mulch bed with bushes. The cause of the fire is most likely discarded smoking material.
