Light Fixture Causes House Fire

Units responded to a house fire November 1, 2015, at approximately 3:30 a.m., near George Mason University. The single-family home is located at 4427 Altura Court.

Firefighters encountered smoke and fire from the rear of the ranch-style home upon arrival. The fire was spotted by a Fairfax County Police helicopter while on patrol and reported it to the 911 call center. The occupants were alerted by the arrival of fire apparatus and escaped unharmed. Firefighters conducted an aggressive fire attack and quickly extinguished the fire. The home did not have any working smoke alarms. Smoke alarms were installed by firefighters prior to departure. Red Cross is supporting the displaced occupants. There were no injuries.

Damage was estimated at $4,500.

According fire investigators, the fire was accidental. A light fixture attached under the deck caused the fire.
