Dehumidifier Causes Burke House Fire

Units responded to a house fire Friday, October 9, 2015, at approximately 4:15 p.m., in the Burke area of Fairfax County. The single-family home is located at 5262 Dunleigh Drive.

Firefighters encountered smoke and fire coming from the rear and basement of the two-story home upon arrival. Firefighters conducted an aggressive fire attack and brought the fire under control in approximately 20 minutes. The occupants were alerted by a sounding smoke alarm and escaped unharmed. Red Cross support was offered but declined by the occupants. Seven occupants have been displaced. There were no injuries.

Damage is estimated at approximately $219,000.

According to fire investigators, the fire was accidental. A malfunctioning dehumidifier in the basement caused the fire.
