Units responded to a townhouse fire Saturday, August 29, 2015, at approximately 12:25 p.m., in the Centreville area of Fairfax County. The single-family home is located at 14715 Bentley Square.
Firefighters encountered smoke and fire coming from a middle unit, three-story townhouse upon arrival. Firefighters conducted an interior and exterior fire attack, bringing the fire under control after several minutes. There was moderate water and fire damage to adjacent townhouses. Firefighters also contended with an underground gas leak in the rear of the townhouse that also caught fire. The home had working smoke alarms; however, the occupants were alerted by the smell of smoke coming from outside the townhouse.
One adult and five juveniles were displaced from the property where the fire originated. Red Cross is providing support to the occupants. Additionally, an adult female was displaced from one of the adjacent townhouses; however, she declined Red Cross support. There were no injuries.
Damage is estimated at $175,000.
According to fire investigators, the fire was intentionally set. A male juvenile ignited combustible materials on the outside that spread to several sheds, to the gas meter, and then to the townhouse, causing the fire.
