Units responded to a house fire Sunday, July 5, 2015, at approximately 7 a.m., in the Springfield area of Fairfax County. The single-family home is located 6816 Hopewell Avenue.
Firefighters encountered light smoke coming from the attic of the ranch-style home upon arrival. Firefighters conducted an aggressive fire attack and quickly brought the fire under control. Firefighters conducted extensive overhaul due to the amount of insulation in the attic. A neighbor alerted the family to the fire; however, the home had a working smoke alarm. Five adults and a juvenile escaped unharmed and have been displaced. Red Cross support was offered but declined by the occupants. There were no injuries.
Damage is estimated at $70,000.
According to fire investigators, the fire was accidental. A thermostat for a gable vented attic fan caused the fire.
