Leaking Acetylene Causes Vienna Service Station Explosion

Units responded to a commercial building fire and explosion Friday, June 19, 2015, at approximately 12:05 a.m., in the Town of Vienna. The commercial building is located at 545 Maple Avenue and is a service station and vehicle repair shop.

Units encountered smoke and fire to the rear of the building upon arrival. Firefighters conducted an aggressive fire attack and quickly extinguished the fire. The fuel pumps were open for business; however, the repair garage was closed. The one occupant inside the building escaped unharmed after hearing an explosion to the rear of the building. There were no injuries.

Damage is estimated at $7,000.

According to fire investigators, the fire started in a secured sea container being used for miscellaneous storage to the rear of the building. The cause of the explosion was leaking acetylene from a pressurized cylinder in the container. The exact cause of the fire is undetermined.
