Smoldering Combustibles Cause Alexandria Apartment Fire

Units responded to an apartment fire Thursday, March 19, 2015, at approximately 7:30 a.m., in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County. The apartment is located at 7501 Republic Court.

Firefighters encountered smoke and fire inside the kitchen of apartment 301 upon arrival of the three-story garden apartment. Firefighters conducted an aggressive fire attack and quickly extinguished the fire. Smoke alarms activated; however, no one was home when the fire broke out. The fire also caused moderate smoke and water damage to an apartment below. Sixteen people have been displaced. Red Cross and apartment management are assisting all of the displaced occupants. There were no injuries.

Damage is estimated at $94,000 to both apartments.

According to fire investigators, the fire was accidental. An improperly discarded smoldering napkin in a trash receptacle caused the fire.
