Units responded to a house fire Thursday, March 19, 2015, at approximately 6:05, a.m., in the West Springfield area of Fairfax County. The single-family home is located at 5631 Southhampton Drive.
Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire coming from the rear deck of the two-story home upon arrival. The Incident Commander struck a second alarm bringing more than 60 firefighters to the scene. Firefighters conducted an aggressive fire attack while simultaneously searching for occupants. The fire was brought under control in approximately 20 minutes.
Firefighters rescued an adult male from the second floor via a ground ladder. He was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Three other occupants self-evacuated the home and were transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Damage is to be determined.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The name of the deceased is being withheld until notification of next of kin. The medical examiner will determine cause of death.
